Hwang has confirmed the plans to the Associated Press at a screening and Q&A in LA for Squid Game. Since its release on Netflix, the show has become a global phenomenon these past couple of months.
“There’s been so mucch pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice,” shared Hwang. “But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”

Though the production team has hinted at season two, this is the first time that the director has officially confirmed the plan. “I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen,” Hwang said as he tempered the expectations. He, however, did officialize lead actor Lee Jung Jae‘s return. “But I will promise you this, Gi Hoon will come back. He will do something for the world,”
Squid Game has racked up 140 million viewers within four weeks of the release, becoming the most-watched Netflix original work. The series paints out the competition, betrayal, solidarity, and respect of those who have risked their lives to play a deadly game to win the prize money.
With the popularity of the show, the actors have also skyrocketed to fame. Lee Jung Jae, Jung Ho Yeon, and Park Hae Soo have attended the event and came under the spotlight, once again confirming people’s unquenchable interest in Squid Game. Especially, Lee Jung Jae’s recent Instagram post that shows him posing with Leonardo DiCaprio has gained explosive responses.
