Yoo Ah In’s ‘Hellbound’ and Han So Hee’s ‘My Name’ will be released at this year’s Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).
On the 25th, BIFF announced that they’ve decided to launch the new program, On Screen section, for the first time in Asia. The section screens highly-anticipated TV series that will be streamed via online video streaming platforms (Over-the-Top, hereinafter OTT).
There are only a handful of leading film festivals around the world, such as the Venice International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, that operate a section similar to the On Screen section. Standing shoulder to shoulder with them, BIFF’s On Screen will be an agile and leading example for another perspective on cinema.
The first-ever invitations for On Screen went out to Yeon Sang Ho’s Hellbound, Kim Jin Min’s My Name, and Anucha Boonyawatana and Josh Kim’s Forbidden. Hellbound and My Name are Netflix original series, while Forbidden is the new HBO ASIA original series.
Hellbound is a story about a supernatural phenomenon where supernatural beings from hell appear out of nowhere to condemn people to hell. A new religious group uses this opportunity to take control, but some people try to uncover the group’s secret. Directed by Train to Busan director Yeon Sang Ho, the series is expected to open a new chapter of the K-thriller genre. Some of the biggest names – Yoo Ah In, Park Jung Min, and Kim Hyun Joo – have joined the cast. Hellbound is an Asian premiere.
My Name is a new project by Extracurricular director Kim Jin Min. It’s an intense and captivating action noir centering around a female character. The series follows the revenge of a woman who goes undercover as a detective to uncover the truth about her father’s death. Han So Hee, Park Hee Soon, and Ahn Bo Hyun took the lead. My Name is a world premiere.
Lastly, Forbidden was co-directed by Thai-born director Anucha Boonyawatana and Korean-American director Josh Kim. The movie follows four friends who travel from Bangkok to a remote village in the mountains for the funeral of one of the group’s father. Besides Thai singer and actor Krissanapoom Pibulsonggram, aka JJ, many rising stars will appear in the project. Together, they will present the ultimate horror you’ve never seen before. Forbidden is a world premiere.
Meanwhile, this year’s BIFF will be held from October 6th to 15th.
