Global sensation BTS has won a prestigious award in recognition of its contribution to strengthening Korea-US relations.

On Oct. 7, the Korea Society, a Korea-US nonprofit foundation for friendship, presented the Van Fleet Award, an award given to individuals or organizations that have promoted mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries since 1992. The award is named after Gen. James Van Fleet, who served as commander of the 8th US Army during the Korean War and founded the Korea Society in 1957.

BTS has been named the winner of this year’s award. The group was highly praised for having influenced the world with music and messages and contributing to the development of Korea-U.S. relations.

“We live in different time and space, but we are connected through music. We are united by sharing culture and stories across borders and languages,” said BTS during their acceptance speech. “We realize the great power of connection and solidarity every moment. We hope that our music will be a link for many people around the world to understand and respect each other.” They finished by saying, “As members of the global community, we should build a deeper understanding and solidarity to live happier together.”

US Korean War Veterans and the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) were also named this year’s winners.
