“I’m always grateful for my wife, who inspires me.”
Director Bong Joon Ho won four awards at the 92nd Academy Awards held at the Los Angeles Dolby Theater on Feb. 9 (local time) for his film “Parasite.” With it, attention is also being paid to his wife Jung Sun Young, whom Bong mentioned in his acceptance speech.
Jung is known to be a screenwriter. She and Bong got married in 1995 and reportedly have participated as Bong’s short film editing staff.
“I met my wife, a movie buff, at a college movie club,” Bong told the American magazine, Vanity Fair, in a recent interview. “She was my first reader. I was always so afraid to show her my finished script,” he said.
Director Bong Joon Ho have confessed that he and his family suffered from a low income before the movie “Memories of Murder.” In the past, Bong appeared on “MBC Special” and recalled how his friend brought him food.
Still, Jung supported her husband’s film activities despite all the hardships. Bong said, “I gave her expenses for a year and asked her to give me one year for my film work. I will always be grateful for her who told me to go for it.”
Bong’s son, Hyo Min, is also a film director. He directed the fourth episode “Wedding” of Directors TV, a web-based project, at YGK Plus, a subsidiary company of YG Entertainment.
In order to avoid any misunderstanding of using the glory of his father’s success, Hyo Min is working as “Hyo Min,” instead of his real name, Bong Hyo Min.
When Bong won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes International Film Festival last year, he accompanied his wife Jung and son Hyo Min to a celebration party.
