Nam Yoon Su has shared a behind-the-scenes story from when he visited a gay club as part of his preparation for his role in Love in the Big City. The TVING drama, based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Park Sang Young, explores the ups and downs of youth and love, bringing new twists to the original story.
Nam Yoon Su plays Go Young, navigating his 20s and 30s in a journey full of emotional highs and lows. To accurately portray the character, Nam visited a famous gay club in Itaewon multiple times with the production team. “I went to a gay club about three or four times. I have a friend who is gay, so I met up with him frequently, too. People there recognized me,” he recalled. “They didn’t think I was gay and just asked me why I was there.”
He recounted a funny moment from one of his visits. “There were so many people my age, and some fans recognized me, but there was one Arab foreigner who spoke Korean really well. He told me, ‘I like your shorts,’ and then offered to buy me a drink. When I declined, he insisted on buying me a glass of water instead. The writer who came with me pulled me away, saying, ‘That’s flirting,’” Nam shared, laughing.
Nam Yoon Su also talked about the reactions he’s received since the drama’s release. “I’ve had a lot of DMs from gay people saying, ‘Thank you for showing our everyday lives,’ or, ‘Watching this feels like reliving my love life in my 20s, and it makes me cry,’” he said. “A lot of those messages have come from international viewers.”
Despite protests and calls to ban the series from certain conservative groups, Nam has been showered with support from fans. “People reach out, telling me not to get hurt by it, and honestly, I’m fine,” he said. “I used to get around ten messages a day, but now it’s about a hundred. I try to respond as much as I can,” he added, expressing his gratitude.
Love in the Big City was released in full on TVING on October 21st.
