Yoo Hae Jin is heading back into the occult, joining Yim Si Wan, Kim So Hyun and Lee Mu Saeng in the new mystery film Modup (literal title), which begins filming September 4th.
Set in the 1960s, the occult mystery centers on a remote island that has gone largely untouched by outsiders and a group of people whose lives become tangled together like an impossible knot.
Yoo, who previously ventured into the genre with Exhuma, stars as Lee Do, the head of a fishing village who guards the community while remaining deeply wary of the isolated island nearby. He becomes the central figure in a mystery connecting the past and present.
The film will also pair Yoo with Yim Si Wan as father and son for the first time. Yim plays Sang Gun, Lee Do’s headstrong son, who travels to the island at Seon Ok’s request despite his father’s objections. After drawing attention for his Chungcheong dialect in Boyhood, the actor will take on a Jeolla dialect for the role.
Kim So Hyun makes her first foray into the occult genre as Seon Ok, a young woman who heads to the island in hopes of finding a cure for a mysterious illness. Her arrival pulls both Lee Do and Sang Gun into a series of unpredictable events.
The film also marks Kim’s return to the big screen after nearly a decade. She reunites with Yim years after the two appeared together in Moon Embracing the Sun.
Lee Mu Saeng rounds out the principal cast as Gu Taek, Seon Ok’s father, who travels to the island as a last resort to save his daughter from increasingly strange symptoms. His desperate search for a cure sets the story’s events in motion.
Modup marks the feature directorial debut of Park Jong Hyun, who previously worked on the directing teams behind films including A Normal Family and Broker. Kang Yun Sung, known for The Outlaws, Big Bet and Low Life, is producing.
Ahead of filming, Yoo said, “We’re starting the shoot together as the weather begins to cool in September. I hope we can finish filming safely, and I’ll do my best to help make this a great film.”
Director Park added, “I’m excited to make my first feature with such wonderful actors and a dependable crew. More than anything, I hope everyone can finish the shoot safely and without any problems.”
