Netflix has set a September 18th premiere for The Scandal, its upcoming Korean period drama starring Son Ye Jin, Ji Chang Wook and Nana.
The series is a Joseon-era reimagining of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel “Dangerous Liaisons” and centers on a dangerous wager involving three people whose desires collide.
Son stars as Lady Cho, a gifted woman constrained by the expectations placed on women of her time. She proposes a provocative romantic bet to Cho Won, played by Ji, a notorious seducer known throughout Joseon.
Nana plays Hee Yeon, the woman who unknowingly becomes the target of their wager.
Director Jung Ji Woo said he wanted the adaptation to go beyond a conventional romance. “I didn’t want it to simply follow the structure of a melodrama,” Jung said. “I built the story around protagonists who have a modern sense of self and ask, ‘Who am I?'”
The newly released teaser poster places the three characters at the center of the story, alongside the tagline, “Desire What Is Forbidden.”
The accompanying teaser introduces the wager that threatens to upend Bukchon society. Lady Cho initiates the game, Cho Won accepts, and Hee Yeon is drawn into it without knowing what is unfolding around her.
As Cho Won begins approaching Hee Yeon in an attempt to win the bet, Lady Cho watches from the sidelines, setting up the power struggle and shifting loyalties at the heart of the series.
The Scandal premieres September 18th on Netflix.
