TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s Soobin is drawing widespread attention after sharing his experience with an alleged taxi overcharge during his recent trip to Cebu—an incident that has since prompted action from local authorities.
On April 1st, Soobin uploaded a travel vlog to TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s official YouTube channel, documenting his trip to Cebu in the Philippines. In the video, he captured a tense moment while traveling from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to his hotel, where a dispute over taxi fare unfolded.
According to Soobin, the expected fare he had checked in advance was around 300 pesos (approx. 5 USD). However, the driver initially demanded 500 pesos, citing the use of “expensive fuel.” Soobin and his group agreed to the higher price and got into the taxi—but shortly after the ride began, the driver suddenly raised the fare again to 1,000 pesos.
“Did you just hear that? It suddenly went up to 1,000 pesos,” Soobin said in the video, clearly taken aback. After a brief argument, the two sides ultimately settled on 500 pesos.
The clip quickly spread across social media, gaining significant attention both internationally and within the Philippines. As the controversy grew, the Philippine Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) stepped in to address the situation.
The LTFRB announced that the driver involved has been ordered to surrender his license plates and driver’s license and has been placed under a 30-day suspension. Authorities are also investigating allegations of overcharging and failure to use a meter, adding that further penalties—including license suspension or revocation—could follow if violations are confirmed.
The agency noted that the incident has negatively impacted the country’s image internationally and even suggested the possibility of criminal charges.
