Hyun Bin has been named an honorary counter-intelligence agent by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service.
The NIS announced on April 7th that Hyun Bin will take part in campaigns to raise awareness about counter-intelligence and why it matters in today’s rapidly changing world. Counter-intelligence refers to efforts to detect and block foreign intelligence activities that threaten national security.
In recent years, the scope of counter-intelligence has expanded. It now covers not just North Korea, but other foreign countries as well, especially in cases involving leaked technology or defense secrets.
The NIS said Hyun Bin was chosen in part because of his past roles. In films and dramas like The Negotiation, Crash Landing on You and Confidential Assignment, he has played characters tied to intelligence and national security.
An NIS official explained, “Counter-intelligence is more important than ever, with recent cases of leaked national secrets. We hope to raise awareness with Hyun Bin, who is widely trusted by the public.”
Hyun Bin, who married Son Ye Jin in 2022, is now stepping into a real-life role that mirrors his on-screen image, this time as an honorary agent helping promote national security.
