The Korean film industry has bid a final, tearful farewell to the legendary actor Ahn Sung Ki.
The funeral ceremony was held at 9 AM on January 9th at the Myeongdong Cathedral Familia Chapel in Seoul. Fellow actors gathered to accompany the late star on his final journey.
Jung Woo Sung, visibly emotional and red-eyed, led the procession carrying the deceased’s portrait. Beside him stood Lee Jung Jae, holding the posthumously awarded Gold Crown Order of Cultural Merit. The coffin was carried by a group of Korea’s top actors, including Sol Kyung Gu, Park Chul Min, Yoo Ji Tae, Park Hae Il, Jo Woo Jin, and Ju Ji Hoon. Following behind the late actor’s two sons were grieving colleagues, including Jung Joon Ho, Hyun Bin, and Byun Yo Han.

Jung Woo Sung, who was entrusted with delivering the eulogy, bowed his head deeply before the portrait of his mentor.
“He was someone who protected his dignity as an actor and his dignity as a human being until the very end,” Jung said, his voice trembling as he shared memories of the legend. “He was always friendly and gentle. Even in the harsh environment of the film industry, he was warmer than anyone else, and deep consideration was ingrained in him, just like his smile.”
Jung remembered Ahn not just as a star, but as a “man of steel” who dedicated his life to preserving the spirit of Korean cinema.
“Starting as a child actor in the 50s, he was strict with himself and sometimes looked lonely, but that gentleness of his was harder and stronger than anything else,” Jung said, honoring the path Ahn had walked.
In a moment that silenced the room, Jung delivered a final, resonant message of respect: “If I were to ask how you felt about today, I imagine you’d answer with your signature neat smile and say, “It was fine.” I deeply respect you, Ahn Sung Ki.”
Ahn Sung Ki passed away on January 5th at the age of 74 at Soonchunhyang University Hospital in Seoul. He had been battling blood cancer.

According to reports, his condition deteriorated suddenly on December 30th when he collapsed at home due to cardiac arrest after choking on food. He was rushed to the intensive care unit but passed away days later, surrounded by his family.
Following the funeral mass, the procession headed to the burial site at Byeolgeurida in Yangpyeong, where the icon of Korean cinema will be laid to rest.
