The fallout surrounding Cho Jin Woong is intensifying as industry insiders come forward with new allegations and legal experts weigh in. The controversy has now expanded beyond the initial revelation of his juvenile record to include accusations of assault during his acting career and questions about how his private records were leaked to the media following his sudden retirement.

The situation escalated further after an online post surfaced from someone claiming to be a film industry professional who had witnessed Cho’s physical and verbal abuse firsthand.

“Cho Jin Woong announced his retirement so abruptly because he knows he can’t handle the new revelations that are about to come out,” the individual claimed.

The poster detailed alleged incidents to support their claims, including a fistfight supposedly triggered when Cho picked a quarrel with supporting actor Jung during a team dinner for the film Man of Will, a figure widely assumed to be actor Jung Man Sik.  Citing this episode, along with rumors of recurring trouble at drinking gatherings and the alleged misconduct of his actor peers, the individual claimed, “It reached a point where the industry actively avoided casting him.”

Documentary director Heo Chul recently claimed on social media that Cho Jin Woong suddenly struck him in the face while they were riding in a car on the way to a film event in 2014. Heo also said that another rookie actor was allegedly assaulted by Cho around the same time, noting that the incident happened “around 2014.”

This led to online speculation naming Park Bo Gum and Jung Hae In as possible figures involved, since both were rookie actors then who appeared with Cho Jin Woong in the 2014 film A Hard Day and the 2015 film Salut d’Amour. However, these mentions are purely speculation circulating online, and there is no confirmed connection to either actor.

The possibility of a Leak From Former Friends Raised

How Cho Jin Woong’s high school incident made its way to the media has become a new point of controversy. Attorney Song Jung Bin said on News1TV, “Only someone directly involved in the case would know the case number or be able to look it up.” He added that it’s possible one of the other individuals who received a protective disposition alongside Cho Jin Woong may have been the source.

He also cast doubt on the idea that a news outlet obtained the court judgment on its own, saying, “It’s unclear why they would go to such lengths.” He noted that institutions like courts and juvenile detention centers are highly unlikely to comply with external requests for such information. Additionally, he pointed out that if the information was leaked internally or obtained through a direct request from a reporter, it would violate Article 70 of the Juvenile Act and could result in criminal penalties.

Could Dispatch Face Shutdown? Damages May Be Pursued Against Outlet

The controversy has now turned toward Dispatch, the outlet that first reported on Cho Jin Woong’s past. Immediately after Cho announced his retirement, his attorney, Kim Kyung Ho, filed a criminal complaint against Dispatch and its reporter, even stating, “Dispatch could shut down over this report.”

Attorney Kim challenged a line in Dispatch’s article that read, “It has been confirmed that he stood criminal trial in his second year of high school.” Kim emphasized that Cho Jin Woong was never tried in criminal court and only received a juvenile protective disposition, a rehabilitative measure that does not leave a criminal record. He added that, under the Juvenile Act, this kind of disposition is not supposed to impact a person’s future.

Kim argued that Dispatch’s reporting effectively portrayed Cho Jin Woong as someone who had faced criminal trials for serious offenses.

He further stressed that the article caused significant damage across Cho’s existing contracts, including drama, film, and advertising deals, and asserted that Dispatch should be held both civilly and criminally liable.
