Yeo Jin Goo is set to begin his mandatory military service. On November 3rd, his agency announced that the actor has been selected for the prestigious KATUSA (Korean Augmentation to the United States Army) program. He will enlist on December 15th and serve for 18 months.

“We will not be disclosing the specific location and time of his enlistment as the training center entrance ceremony will be attended by numerous other service members and their families,” the agency stated, asking fans to refrain from visiting the site.

The agency added, “We always appreciate the continued interest shown towards Yeo Jin Goo. We ask for your unchanging support and encouragement until he healthily completes his mandatory military service and returns with a more mature appearance.”

What is KATUSA?

KATUSA is a unique program within the South Korean military. It stands for Korean Augmentation to the United States Army. While the soldiers are part of the Republic of Korea Army, they are dispatched to serve alongside U.S. Forces Korea. They perform various duties within U.S. military units, and their daily life is conducted primarily in English.

Getting into KATUSA is highly competitive. Applicants must first achieve a very high score on an official English proficiency test like TOEIC or TOEFL and are then selected from that pool through a lottery system.

Several other prominent Korean celebrities have served in KATUSA, including Young K of DAY6, broadcaster Jun Hyun Moo and singer Verbal Jint.
