The opening ceremony of the 30th Busan International Film Festival had an unexpected and delightful highlight: a surprise “aegyo battle” between Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro and South Korean actress Shin Ye Eun that became the most viral moment of the night.
For those unfamiliar, aegyo is a Korean term for acting in a cute, charming, or “cutesy” way, often involving playful facial expressions and hand gestures like finger hearts.
The fun began on September 17th when the camera zoomed in on Shin Ye Eun in the audience. Unfazed by the camera, she delighted the crowd with playful winks and “cheek hearts.”Her co-star Rowoon was seen laughing beside her.
Moments later, the camera turned to Guillermo del Toro, who hilariously responded in kind. The acclaimed director put a finger to his mouth and pulled at his cheeks to make a cute face, drawing a massive round of applause from the audience.
The playful moment soon spread, with other stars like Shim Eun Kyung and Maggie Kang also getting in on the fun.
Shin Ye Eun is at the festival to promote her new Disney Plus series The Murky Stream, while del Toro is attending for a Gala Presentation of Frankenstein.
The Busan International Film Festival runs for ten days, concluding on September 26.
