
South Korean superstar Lee Byung Hun has been named a recipient of a Special Tribute Award at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival. The festival announced the honorees for its annual TIFF Tribute Awards on Tuesday, recognizing individuals who have made outstanding contributions to cinema.
Lee joins a prestigious group of fellow honorees, including directors Guillermo del Toro and Hikari, and acclaimed actor-director Jodie Foster.
“We’re thrilled to announce this year’s recipients, each of whom has left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape: from the commanding talent of Lee Byung Hun; the visionary imagination of maestro Guillermo del Toro; the evocative storytelling of HIKARI; to the incomparable career of actor, filmmaker, and icon Jodie Foster,” TIFF announced in a statement.
TIFF lauded Lee as a “a global sensation” who has achieved “massive success across film and television in both South Korea and Hollywood.”
Adding to the celebration, the festival will host the North American gala premiere of No Other Choice, the latest film from celebrated director Park Chan Wook, starring Lee in the lead role.
The 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival is scheduled to run from September 4th to 14th in Toronto. The TIFF Tribute Awards ceremony will be held on September 7th.
