Shin Mina says she’s more than ready for a darker role.
“I’ve always wanted to play a villain,” Shin said during a press interview on Wednesday for Netflix’s new six-part thriller Karma. “When I first got the script for ‘Karma’, I wondered if maybe I’d finally get to be the bad guy… but nope,” she laughed.
Based on the Kakao Webtoon of the same name, Karma is a gritty crime thriller following six people bound by fated, toxic connections. The main cast includes Lee Hee Jun, Shin Mina, Lee Kwang Soo, Gong Seung Yeon, Park Hae Soo, and Kim Sung Kyun. From a loan shark who wants his father dead to a couple covering up a hit-and-run, nearly every character in Karma operates in morally gray territory. Shin Mina, however, plays Ju Yeon, one of the few who leans toward “good.”
“I honestly want to try a role like the Witness,” she said, referring to Park Hae Soo’s character. “And Gong Seung Yeon’s role has her own charms. I’d like to try something like that too.”
But Shin says she’s never even had the chance. “I’ve never been offered a villain role. I don’t even get those scripts,” she said. “But then I thought the directors must want a certain image and performance from me. Still, if I’m given a chance, I’d like to play a villain.”
The actress continued, “I think every actor wonders at some point, ‘Am I showing people the same side of myself over and over?’ I’ve been acting since I was young, so I know these moments are necessary.”
Still, she’s grateful for the shift Karma offered. “But I’m really grateful I even got a script like ‘Karma.’ Just being offered something different made me want to work harder. And if I do get the chance to try something else—I’ll be ready.”
Karma premiered April 4 on Netflix and is streaming now.
