Director Kim Jung Hyun of Hyper Knife opened up about the drama’s ending in an interview with iMBC Entertainment on April 10th.
Hyper Knife is a medical thriller that follows a fierce showdown between Se Ok (played by Park Eun Bin), a once-promising genius doctor, and her former mentor Deok Hee (Sol Kyung Gu), who caused her downfall.
The drama wrapped up with an open ending that left viewers speculating about Deok Hee’s fate. Director Kim explained, “We felt that if the ending was too closed, it might come off as too predictable. We debated a lot over whether to include a post-credit scene. There were strong opinions that the dogs must be saved. You can see someone’s feet entering the operating room in that final scene — it’s an easy answer who they belong to. Most viewers guessed it correctly.”
Some viewers interpreted the ending as a hint at a potential second season. Kim said, “Whether or not there’s a Season 2 isn’t up to one person,” but added, “I wrote the ending with the assumption that Se Ok is out there somewhere, living her life doing what she passionately loves. The story leaves room for expansion, and if viewers show enough love, a new season may happen. I wanted to leave the ending open to interpretation.”
He also shared a memorable piece of viewer feedback: “Someone called it a ‘weird drama, a crazy drama’ — and I took that as a compliment. I’m grateful that people followed the direction I intended and appreciated the subtle props, symbolism and details. For viewers who were expecting a typical thriller piece, our drama might have been confusing, but I’m thankful they paid such close attention and didn’t miss a thing.”
Hyper Knife released its final episode on Disney Plus on April 9th.
