DJ Koo, aka Koo Jun Yup, said his final goodbye to his wife, actress Barbie Hsu.
According to Taiwanese media outlet ET Today and others on March 15th, Barbie Hsu’s funeral was held at Chin Pao San Cemetery in Jinshan District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. The ceremony took place 42 days after her passing on February 2nd. Barbie Hsu was laid to rest in the Rose Garden in the cemetery, with her husband, DJ Koo, her two children, her younger sister Dee Hsu, her mother, and other family members in attendance. Her ex-husband Wang Xiaofei did not attend.
According to reports, rain fell that day as DJ Koo personally carried his wife’s urn and walked to the burial site, accompanying her until the very end. While holding her ashes and heading toward the grave, DJ Koo broke down in tears multiple times and appeared to struggle for breath. Funeral staff held umbrellas for him, and the farewell ceremony conducted amid the storm carried an especially solemn atmosphere.
Media outlets reported that DJ Koo has lost at least 6kg due to extreme grief following his wife’s sudden death, and those around him have expressed concern after witnessing him frequently in tears.
The family had originally planned to conduct a tree burial without erecting a tombstone or leaving the deceased’s name, in consideration of Barbie Hsu’s lifetime advocacy for environmental protection. However, DJ Koo expressed, “I want to have a separate space where I can visit my wife anytime,” and after further discussion with the family, they decided to change the burial location.
Barbie Hsu announced her marriage to DJ Koo in 2022. The couple had gained attention for reconnecting after breaking up 20 years earlier. Barbie Hsu passed away on February 2nd from influenza-induced pneumonia while traveling in Japan.
