Jeon Hye Jin is making her return to television after the passing of her husband, actor Lee Sun Kyun, in 2023.
The actress took part in the production conference for Genie TV’s Mother and Mom on the 25th. “It’s been a while since I’ve met with everyone,” she started. “I play a woman who’s pouring all her energy into raising her 7-year-old daughter preparing for an entrance exam.”
Describing her character, Jeon explained, “She’s someone who struggles to do well in both childcare and her career.” She added a personal connection to the role, saying, “My very close friend is also named ‘Lee Jung Eun.’ The fact that the character shares a name with my agency CEO was also a big reason (I joined the project). I wanted to portray Jung Eun.”
“I’m personally very interested in education too—regardless of time or place, it’s inevitable when you have the title of ‘mother,'” Jeon shared. “Stories about the Daechi-dong academy district can’t help but catch attention. It’s heartbreaking and unfortunate. There are also stories about (Jung Eun’s own) mother, and those aspects drew me to appear in this project.”
When asked how closely she relates to her character Lee Jung Eun, Jeon said “about 70%.”
“I think it’s because I also have a child and work,” Jeon elaborated. “Honestly, I wonder if I’m as passionate (as a mother) as Jung Eun. I have many thoughts about education, but I wondered, ‘Is it right for me to identify with Jung Eun?’ I don’t know what the right answer is, and I’m still contemplating it. I do my best according to the situation, but I don’t think I can be as devoted as Jung Eun.”
She continued, “Through Jung Eun, I want to encourage and cheer on mothers. Whatever happens, you’re doing your best. That path might be the wrong one, and you might regret it when you look back, but I want to comfort them.”
Mother and Mom tells the story of single mother Yoon Ji A (Jo Min Su) and her working mom daughter Lee Jung Eun (Jeon Hye Jin) as they embark on the ride of life together. The series will premiere on March 3rd at 10 PM KST through Genie TV, Genie TV Mobile, and ENA.
