Go Ara and Han Seung Yeon are venturing into uncharted territory with their first mature-rated period drama in TVING’s The Scandal of Chunhwa, as revealed at the series’ press conference held at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul on February 5th.
The series follows a legitimate royal princess who ventures outside the palace to experience free romance before personally selecting her husband through a royal marriage selection process.
Go Ara, who took over the role of Princess Hwari after Go Ah Sung’s injury-related departure, expressed gratitude for the opportunity: “I was actually preparing for another traditional period project, so I was already prepared for the historical setting. When I read the script, I found Princess Hwari’s personality and life journey very relatable and understandable. The script was that engaging, and I could join the production without pressure.”
Addressing the R-rating, director Lee Kwang Young emphasized, “We didn’t film this focusing on how racy the scenes are.” Go Ara elaborated, “The mature rating came naturally since we’re telling love stories. I chose this project because I was charmed by the messages that all characters, including mine, aim to convey.”
Han Seung Yeon, cast as Ji Won, the beautiful sister of a top scholar, addressed concerns about the intimate scenes: “Considering my public image, some might wonder ‘Can she do this kind of role?’ but I’ve actually been an adult since my debut.” She continued, “While performing these scenes, I viewed them as natural expressions of the character’s love story. I had thorough discussions with the director, and worked hard with my co-star. I think the result is beautiful. I hope viewers watch it with affection and find entertainment in the character’s complexities rather than focusing on the provocative elements.”
The series also features Chang Ryul as Choi Hwan, the princess’s first potential husband candidate and a wealthy playboy, Chan Hee as Sungkyunkwan elite scholar Jang Won, and Son Woo Hyeon as the crown prince and Princess Hwari’s older brother.
The Scandal of Chunhwa premieres its first two episodes on TVING at noon on February 6th.
