Sang Heon Lee made his acting debut in the 2023 Netflix series XO, Kitty and recently returned for its second season. The show, a spinoff of the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series, centers on Kitty Song Covey (played by Anna Cathcart), an American girl navigating life, love, and self-discovery at an international school in Seoul. While Lee’s character Min Ho wasn’t Kitty’s love interest in Season 1, Season 2 hints that he could be her next boyfriend.

Min Ho’s Journey in Season 2

In interviews with Decider and Forbes, Lee reflected on Min Ho’s evolution, particularly his relationships with Kitty, his family, and himself. “There’s Kitty with the old relationship where he had to try to ignore the embarrassing past interaction that he had on the plane with her, and at the same time, somehow, surprisingly, he had to face his family,” Lee shared with Decider over a Zoom call. “I feel like he really tackled each of them pretty well, and I think I’m most proud of him for how he got a really healthy relationship with his father because it’s not something so easy to do. And I’m glad that he did it now.”

While Kitty’s journey in Season 2 focuses on connecting with her estranged family, exploring her sexuality, and confronting hidden feelings for Yuri Han (played by Gia Kim), Min Ho’s chemistry with her quietly simmers in the background. This, despite Min Ho’s insistence that his confession in Season 1 was a moment of “temporary insanity.”

One of the lighter moments in the season occurs when Min Ho perceives Peter, Kitty’s sister Lara Jean’s boyfriend, as a romantic threat. In Episode 6, Min Ho keeps a watchful eye on Peter during a lacrosse tournament at Stanford University. “Despite him knowing that Kitty’s sister is already in a relationship with him, he sort of got protective,” Lee said. “He sort of got like, ‘Wait, I need to be more masculine in front of him.’ He tried to square up on him, and he tried to undermine him by saying, ‘What is this you’re here for, like, a ping pong tournament?’”

Lee admitted that it was “very cute of Min Ho to do that,” noting that Peter (played by Noah Centineo) ultimately brushes off Min Ho’s antics with a good-natured reassurance that there’s “no beef” between them. Speaking about Centineo, Lee shared, “He’s a cool dude. We actually had some things in common. We both collect art, so we ended up chatting about that.”

Interestingly, Lee’s real-life sister, Gia Kim, plays one of Kitty’s love interests. Despite the onscreen love triangle, Lee says there’s no competition at home. “You know, I don’t think we’ve ever talked about this, really,” he admitted. “I just hope the best for Kitty. If I had to say this more bluntly, I would say I’m not exactly the person where I ship so much because, you know, at the end of the day, it’s a relationship… I feel like I sort of want to wish the best for Kitty, regardless of her connection with Min Ho or Yuri.”

Min Ho’s Future and Self-Discovery

By the end of Season 2, Min Ho seems to have sworn off love after the whole fiasco with Stella, but that changes when Kitty finally comes to her senses. “I don’t think he closed his mind to Kitty,” Lee said. “He only just tried to tell himself and sort of let her know that despite anyone liking me or me liking that other person, I’m going to try to find myself as well.”

Lee Reflects on Acting, Identity and What’s Next for Min Ho

Outside of Min Ho’s storyline, Lee opened up about his personal journey into acting during his Forbes interview. He said he “instinctively knew” acting was his calling. Reflecting on his passion, Lee shared, “I know it sounds very simple. But I wasn’t exactly a person who was academically inclined. I wasn’t the core dude in the group, and I didn’t really sometimes feel like I fit in within a group. But being able to play different sides of me or what I could potentially be on screen was definitely the best part about acting.”

Lee identifies as a Korean actor, even though two of the three productions he’s appeared in were made outside Korea. “Initially, I thought I’d be living and acting in Korea, working alongside the great actors I admired in the Korean films and dramas I watched while I was abroad,” he shared. “So, it was definitely unexpected to showcase myself to the world so quickly. But it was more of a pleasant surprise than anything else.”

For now, fans eagerly await news of XO, Kitty Season 3. As Min Ho and Kitty’s story unfolds, Lee teased his excitement about what’s to come. “She rolled the dice and saw how the game plays. So again, great for her and growth from Min Ho’s side. And I’m really excited to see how it progresses in Season 3 if there is a Season 3.”
