Na In Woo finally addressed swirling controversies about his military service exemption during the press conference for his new MBC drama Motel California on January 9th.
The emotional moment came when the actor, who received a Grade 4 supplementary service classification before ultimately being exempted after a three-year waiting period, responded to questions about his military status.
“I apologize for having to address this matter at this venue,” Na began. “The first article came out while we were filming, and I only found out about it after we finished shooting. By then, it was already late at night.”
The actor became visibly emotional as he explained his previous silence on the matter. “Given how sensitive this issue is, I should have made a quick decision, but I chose to remain silent,” he said. “Many people appreciate my bright, energetic, and positive image, so even when I was struggling and in pain, I couldn’t show that side. I tried to maintain a bright appearance.”
Na In Woo concluded carefully, “While I cannot discuss my personal circumstances or medical diagnosis, I wanted to be honest in hopes that people would see me for who I really am,” indirectly indicating that his Grade 4 classification was related to psychological or mental health concerns.
The controversy ignited online after news of his final exemption broke, with skeptics questioning the legitimacy of his Grade 4 classification. One netizen even filed a formal complaint with the Military Manpower Administration, questioning how the actor, who stands at 190cm and has displayed vibrant energy on various shows, could qualify for supplementary service.
