IU and Byeon Woo Seok will share the screen in the upcoming romantic drama set in a modern monarchy.

Kakao Entertainment confirmed that IU and Byeon Woo Seok have been cast in MBC’s upcoming series 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife (working title), which is planned by Kang Dae Seon, written by Yoo Ah In, and co-produced by MBC and Kakao Entertainment.

The drama takes place in a fictionalized 21st-century South Korea with a constitutional monarchy. It tells the story of a wealthy woman, frustrated by her status as a commoner despite her privileges, and a prince, trapped in his royal position with nothing to call his own, as they challenge societal norms. The script earned recognition as a winner in MBC’s drama scriptwriting contest.

IU will play Seong Hee Joo, the second daughter of South Korea’s top-ranking chaebol family. Born with a silver spoon, she has it all—intelligence, stunning beauty, and a relentless competitive spirit. However, her status as a mere “commoner” becomes a surprising obstacle in her life, leading her to cross paths with Prince Lee Ahn.

Byeon Woo Seok takes on the role of Lee Ahn, the second prince of South Korea’s royal family. Despite his royal title, he leads a constrained life with nothing to truly call his own. Meeting Hee Joo sparks a transformation in him, setting the stage for a heartfelt and inspiring romance.

Fans are already abuzz with excitement over the romantic chemistry between IU and Byeon Woo Seok. 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife is scheduled to premiere in late 2025 on MBC.
