Jo Yoon Hee shared the reasons behind her divorce from Lee Dong Gun on the first episode of TV CHOSUN’s Now I’m Alone, which aired on the 9th. The episode featured actors Jeon No Min, Jo Yoon Hee, and former announcer Choi Dong Seok discussing various personal stories.
Reflecting on her divorce, Jo Yoon Hee said, “It’s been five years since the divorce. Time has flown by. As a single mom, I have a lot to handle on my own. I am a very introverted person, so I often feel anxious and fearful about taking on new challenges. I decided to appear on this show to overcome those feelings. I want to be a more adventurous and courageous mom for my daughter.”
Talking about her marriage to Lee Dong Gun, she explained, “I admired how he wisely guided me. He was very good at it, and it felt like I was destined to marry at that time. I wanted to have and raise a child. I thought he was a good man, and having someone to lean on was comforting.”
However, the marriage ended in divorce after three years. Jo Yoon Hee revealed, “I never thought divorce was an option when I got married. Since my ex-husband and I were in the same industry, I can’t speak candidly about our married life. It wasn’t the kind of marriage I had dreamed of, and I struggled with the decision, but ultimately, I felt divorce was the only solution.”
She added, “(Lee Dong Gun) didn’t want the divorce. Trust and faith within a family are crucial, but we could no longer be a family. That’s why I decided to go through with the divorce. Although we don’t communicate personally, I regularly send him photos of our child. He responds to voice recordings and calls whenever he wants to speak with her. I’ve always considered what’s best for our daughter.”
The actress also shared her thoughts on the stigma of divorce, stating, “Divorce can be uncomfortable and something people want to hide, but I didn’t feel that way. I can confidently talk about the divorce because I remain a devoted mother. I’ve always been confident in raising my daughter alone.”
She further elaborated on her childhood, saying, “My parents had a strained relationship, and the tense atmosphere at home terrified me. I hated those memories, and I didn’t want my child to witness fighting. After the divorce, I had no doubts about raising her without any negative influence regarding her father, which gave me the courage to go through with the divorce.”
