The film depicts the journey of North Korean defector Loh Kiwan (Song Joong Ki) who seeks refugee status in Belgium, haunted by his mother’s last wish to “survive.” There, his path crosses with Mari (Choi Sung Eun), a former national shooting champion grappling with the loss of her mother.

Both actors are drawn to the film’s message of resilience and compassion. Song Joong Ki finds “the dynamic between two polar opposites finding comfort in each other” particularly compelling, while Choi Sung Eun describes it as “a story about human rights and finding solace in loved ones.”

Director Kim Hee Jin also shared, “I wanted to explore how even amidst suffering, there are sparks of hope that keep us going. I hope viewers will connect with Loh Kiwan’s fight for survival and the transformation he experiences when he meets Mari.”

My Name is Loh Kiwan premieres globally on Netflix on March 1st.
