Weak Hero Class 2, season 2 of Weak Hero Class 1, is making an unusual platform switch, moving from WAVVE to Netflix.
Multiple sources revealed that the producers of Weak Hero Class 1 Season 2 are considering releasing the show on Netflix. This comes as a rare case where Season 1 aired on WAVVE while the following season is set for Netflix.
The shift is largely attributed to WAVVE’s operational difficulties, which have left the platform unable to invest further in original content. WAVVE reported an operating loss of 121.7 billion KRW (approx. 93 million USD) last year and has accumulated a deficit of 79.7 billion KRW as of the third quarter this year. Despite continuous investments in original content, WAVVE has struggled to achieve significant returns.
These internal issues at WAVVE have impacted the production of Weak Hero Class 1 Season 2. Weak Hero Class 1, released last year, has been one of WAVVE’s most successful contents. Faced with capital issues, the decision to switch platforms was made, and Netflix had no reason to decline the already somewhat guaranteed success of the series. After extensive discussions between WAVVE and the production company, the negotiations are reportedly in the final stages.
In response to these developments, a Netflix representative stated, “It’s true that we are internally reviewing the matter. However, as we are not yet in a position to make a decision, we ask for your understanding that it is difficult to provide a response at this time.”
Based on a webtoon of the same name, Weak Hero Class 1 followed Yeon Shi Eun, a top 1% model student who appears frail but stands up against violence inside and outside of school. The series was well-received, winning the Best OTT Original category at the 5th Asia Contents Awards & Global OTT Awards. The script reading for Season 2, marking the start of its production, took place on the 1st.
