Suzy talked about her 20s as an idol and gave a glimpse into her upcoming Netflix series Doona! in a newly released Cosmopolitan Korea interview on the 17th.
Based on a webtoon of the same name, Doona! follows retired K-pop idol Doona as she navigates life in a shared house and sparks a romance with ordinary college student Won Joon.
Suzy shares a special bond with her character, Doona. “My experiences differ from what Doona has gone through, but I could understand her more than anyone else,” Suzy confides. “It made me recall my idol days. In my early 20s, I had no room to feel and express pain like Doona. I kept my emotions bottled up. But Doona feels her emotions fully and struggles openly, purposely saying mean things. This aspect of her makes you want to comfort her and yet feel satisfied at the same time. It was exhilarating to play her,” she adds with a chuckle. “I talked to the director about wanting people to initially misunderstand Doona but eventually come to understand her.”
When asked what her life would have been like if she, like Doona, had left the idol life to enjoy campus life, Suzy quipped, “I would have lived really well, enjoying more than anyone!”
On another note, Suzy opened up about how her role in the critically acclaimed drama Anna gave her newfound confidence. “I gained assurance in myself,” she reveals. “I started to believe in myself a little more. I feel very satisfied now that people don’t see me as just a pretty face.”
So, what’s next for Suzy? “I’d like to age well, get wrinkles in the right places, be cool, and move at my own pace,” she shares. “Rather than being tied to the past or the future, I aim to live for the moment like a mayfly. If I live each day as a decent day, I’ll end up as a decent adult, won’t I? (laughs)”
Suzy’s candor gives us yet another reason to adore her, and we can’t wait to see how she continues to evolve both on-screen and off.
