In the first half of 2020, girl groups showed outstanding performances. A number of popular girl groups made their comeback, and several new girl groups have made their debut in the K-POP scene, which has been sluggish due to the aftermath of COVID-19, entertaining music fans.

OH MY GIRL was the girl group that showed the best performances in the first half of this year. OH MY GIRL, who is now in the sixth year since their debut, made a comeback on April 27 with their seventh mini-album NONSTOP. OH MY GIRL, who has been growing steadily while maintaining their team color, has grown to be one of the top girl groups with this album. The new song “Nonstop” has not only topped all major music charts, but also topped the iTunes K-Pop album charts in 21 regions around the world, captivating the global fans.

ITZY, who is in the second year since their debut, also cannot be skipped. After announced the birth of big rookie group by sweeping various awards last year, ITZY stood as one of the top girl groups with its second mini-album IT’z ME, released on March 9. It is said that they have shown the “ultimate” of girl group performances through “WANNABE.”

TWICE once again proved its name value. They made a comeback with their ninth mini-album MORE & MORE on June 1 and set numerous records during their short two-week activities. The pre-orders of the album exceeded 500,000 copies, and they managed to enter Billboard 200 chart for the first time, not to mention topping all major music charts in Korea. On top of that, they won their 100th trophies from music shows, proving themselves to be the best K-POP girl group.

APINK, who has celebrated the 10th anniversary of their debut, also showed off their power. Despite already being the role models of many artists, they made a comeback in April, signaling that their heyday is still ongoing. In particular, the fact that it’s impossible to find girl groups who are still working together after 10 years except for Brown Eyed Girls and APINK and also since APINK became the first girl group with more than 10 years of career since Wonder Girls to top music charts and win music shows, APINK’s performance is all the more meaningful.

The competition has intensified even more with IZ*ONE’s comeback, and BLACKPINK is still showing global firepower by entering Billboard Hot 100 chart with their new song “Sour Candy,” which they collaborated with Lady Gaga. Now, BLACKPINK is getting ready for their comeback with a pre-released on June 26, while Red Velvet’s first unit group, Irene & Seulgi, is also preparing for the release of their first album. Naturally, the competition among girl groups in the first half of the year is expected to get hotter.
