This year’s Baeksang Arts Awards was particularly a close race. The moment when the winners were announced didn’t come easily. The committee underwent several rounds of discussions and held a vote on the very day of the ceremony.

In the film category, the Grand Prize and the Best Film Award were given to Parasite and director Bong Joon Ho after competing in good faith. Although the results that Parasite received over the past year have been mesmerizing, they focused more on the fact that the challenges and experiences of director Bong Joon Ho since his debut flourished through Parasite. In the end, the Grand Prize went to director Bong Joon Ho, and Parasite was awarded the Best Film Award.

Lee Byung Hun and Jeon Do Yeon won the Best Actor and Best Actress Awards. Lee Byung Hun (The Man Standing Next) competed with Song Kang Ho (Parasite), while Jeon Do Yeon (Birthday) competed with Kim Hee Ae (Moonlit Winter) and Kim So Jin (Another Child) and won by one vote. Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress Awards, which went to Lee Kwang Soo (Inseperable Bros) and Kim Sae Byuk (House of Hummingbird), is the only unanimous approval among all the acting awards. Park Myung Hoon (Parasite) was selected as the winner of the Best New Actor Award after competing Park Hae Soo (Time to Hunt).

The TV category was as hot as the film category. Until the day of the ceremony, When the Camellia Blooms, Mr. Trot, and Kim Hee Ae competed over the Grand Prize. After the fierce competition, When the Camellia Blooms was chosen as the winner unanimously. As When the Camellia Blooms was awarded the Grand Prize, naturally, the Best Drama Award went to Hot Stove League.

The Best Actor Award was so fierce that it was said, “no complaints, no matter who wins.” Kang Ha Neul (When the Camellia Blooms) and Nam Goong Min (Hot Stove League) competed for three rounds of evaluation. Eventually, the award went to Kang Ha Neul. The Best Actress Award began as a three-way competition among Kim Hee Ae (The World of the Married), Gong Hyo Jin (When the Camellia Blooms), and Kim Hye Soo (Hyena), and was later narrowed down to Kim Hee Ae and Gong Hyo Jin. In the end, the award was given to Kim Hee Ae. Best New Actor Award was a competition between Ahn Hyo Seop (Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim 2) and Kim Kang Hoon (When the Camellia Blooms), whereas the Best New Actress Award was a showdown between Kim Dami (Itaewon Class) and Jeon Mi Do (Hospital Playlist).
