There has been a continuous slump in romance dramas. Even those starring young stars with strong fan base are struggling with viewer ratings ranging from only 1% to 2%.
According to ratings agency Nielsen Korea, JTBC’s Monday-Tuesday drama When the Weather Is Fine, which has recently aired its tenth episode, has not been able to surpass 2% viewer ratings. The fact that Park Min Young and Seo Kang Joon has come together in a romance drama made headlines even before the show was aired, but these attention was not connected to the viewership.
The fantasy romance drama Meow, the Secret Boy has received harsh criticism and is showing 1% viewer ratings. The drama, which recorded 3.6% and 2.8% ratings for the first and second episode, but since then, it has dropped down to 1% ratings.
A Piece of Your Mind, starring Jung Hae In, is also suffering a great deal. The drama recorded 2.4% for the first episode and 2.1% for the second episode, but fell to 1% in the third and fourth episodes. Viewers cite warm movie-like images as the strength of the drama, but the lack of probability in the story is causing people to avoid the work.
“The fact that romance dramas are showing poor ratings even in the midst of spring proves that strong narrative is much more important than the fandom of popular actors,” a source said.
