tvN has confirmed that The Second Signal will premiere despite controversy surrounding a cast member’s past actions. The network considered using AI to replace the actor but ultimately ruled out the option due to technical limitations.
tvN released an official statement addressing viewers’ concerns on November 6th.
“We take the concerns and opinions of viewers regarding The Second Signal very seriously,” the network said. “A cast member’s past actions are not something we can take lightly.”
However, tvN stressed that the drama was not made by one actor alone. “Many cast and crew members have put their time and effort into this project, from the early planning stages to filming and post-production,” the network said.
It added that viewers should separate their opinions of the actor from the value of the drama and the hard work of everyone involved.
The Second Signal will premiere on December 7th as a Monday-Tuesday drama, with its broadcast time moved to 10 PM. The eight-episode series will air Episodes 1 and 2 back-to-back on its premiere night, with some scenes shortened or edited. Episode 3 will follow on December 8th, after which the series will air one episode every Monday and Tuesday.
tvN also revealed that they explored ways to alter scenes featuring the actor, including video editing technology and AI-based replacement. However, tests showed that the technology could not convincingly recreate the actor’s performance or maintain the natural flow of the story.
tvN made it clear that airing the drama does not mean it supports or excuses the actor’s past actions.
“We also considered the viewers who have waited a long time for this series, as well as the many actors and crew members who worked hard to complete it,” the network said. “We will do our best to share the story and meaning of the series while remembering our responsibilities as a broadcaster.”
