Director Yeon Sang Ho’s upcoming film Paradise Lost has been pre-sold to 118 countries ahead of its release.
Distributor CJ ENM announced on October 19th that Paradise Lost has been pre-sold to 118 countries, generating enough revenue to exceed its net production cost of approximately 500 million won ($375,000). The achievement highlights international audiences’ trust in Yeon’s filmmaking, the appeal of the film’s original story, and CJ ENM’s global distribution network.
A representative from CJ ENM’s international distribution team said the film has attracted strong interest overseas because its unique setting explores universal themes of family and motherhood that resonate across cultures.
The film has also received a warm reception at major international film festivals. At the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, Paradise Lost was invited to the Special Presentations program, with all seats for its four official screenings sold out. All four of its screenings in the Gala Presentation section at the 31st Busan International Film Festival also sold out.
Paradise Lost will next screen at the 46th Hawaii International Film Festival, which opens October 21st. The film has been selected for the festival’s Korean Cinema Special Showcase and is scheduled to screen on November 1 and 4 in the United States.
The Hawaii International Film Festival is known for showcasing films from across the Asia-Pacific region and around the world, promoting cultural exchange between Eastern and Western cinema.
Paradise Lost follows Ryu So Young (played by Kim Hyun Joo), a mother whose son disappeared nine years ago in a camping school bus incident. Believing him to be dead, she is stunned when her son, Ryu Seon Woo (Bae Hyeon Seong), miraculously returns alive.
The film is set to hit theaters on October 21st.
