Martial law was declared in South Korea for the first time in 44 years, with President Yoon Suk Yeol making the announcement. Although it was lifted in less than six hours, the aftermath has significantly impacted various industries across the country. The entertainment industry has been no exception, as year-end events such as concerts and award ceremonies face potential cancellations, with many closely monitoring how the situation develops.

No Drama or Variety Awards This Year? Networks Still in Talks

Broadcasting insiders told Star News on December 4th that discussions about canceling the three major network award ceremonies have taken place. However, they clarified that no official cancellation notices have been issued, and the events are still scheduled to proceed. A network representative commented, “Although martial law has been lifted, we are keeping a close eye on the situation.”

Cancelled and Resumed Interviews

Netflix original series The Trunk was directly affected by the declaration of martial law. Seo Hyun Jin, the show’s lead, had been scheduled for an interview in Seoul today, but it was canceled.

Amid these chaotic developments, several celebrities have shared their thoughts on the situation. Broadcaster and writer Heo Ji Woong voiced his frustration, stating, “I can’t take this anymore.” Actress Kim Ji Woo reflected on the surreal experience, saying,  “I never imagined I’d experience the declaration of martial law in my lifetime… to see martial law troops blockading the National Assembly—what is this? It’s not the soldiers’ fault. The young soldiers deployed there are probably much younger than me… They’re not to blame.”

Singer Lee Seung Hwan, who initially canceled his concert, announced its resumption shortly after martial law was lifted.

Meanwhile, Lee Sang Min addressed fans with a message of reassurance, writing, “South Korea will handle this well. The Korean people will steer through this martial law crisis in the right direction.” He continued, “The country is neither at war nor in turmoil. Martial law was declared due to political conflict, and the National Assembly has since resolved to end it. South Korea is safe. I want to assure everyone who loves South Korea around the world that everything will be fine.”

Timeline of Martial Law: From Declaration to Lifting

President Yoon declared martial law in a national address at 10:23 PM the previous day.

Martial law refers to a state of emergency declared by the president in the event of war, rebellion, or other national crises that disrupt public order to the extent that administrative and judicial functions become difficult to maintain. Once declared, the martial law commander assumes control over all administrative and judicial affairs within the affected regions.

At around 1 AM on December 4th, the National Assembly unanimously passed a motion to lift martial law, with all 190 members present voting in favor. At 4:25 AM, President Yoon announced the lifting of martial law, just six hours after its declaration and 3 hours and 30 minutes after the National Assembly’s resolution to end it.
