Kim Ji Won is heading into the operating room for a darker kind of medical drama.
SBS’ upcoming Friday-Saturday series Doctor X: The Age of the White Mafia (literal title) has set an October 9th premiere and released its first look at the cast during a recent table read.
The medical noir stars Kim as Gye Soo Jung, a brilliant surgeon known as the “mad dog of the OR.” Dispatched through a doctor staffing agency, Soo Jung relies on her surgical skill alone as she takes on the entrenched hierarchy and corruption inside Guseo University Hospital.
The series is directed by Lee Jung Rim, whose credits include VIP, Revenant and As You Stood By, and written by Pyeon Seong Geun.
At the read-through, Kim leaned into Soo Jung’s intimidating presence as a surgeon obsessed with her craft while also showing a more unexpected side of the character outside the hospital.
Lee Jeong Eun stars as Jang Hee Sook, the head of the doctor staffing agency that sends Soo Jung into the hospital. Though she initially comes across as money-driven, Hee Sook is also a shrewd strategist who regularly cleans up after Soo Jung. Their relationship is described as extending beyond a simple business partnership.
Son Hyun Joo plays Boo Seung Kwon, the head of Guseo University Hospital’s branch facility, who is struggling to keep the institution from falling apart.
Kim Woo Seok joins as Park Tae Kyung, a privileged but well-meaning intern whose hospital life becomes considerably more complicated after meeting Soo Jung. The two form an unusual mentor-trainee dynamic.
The ensemble also includes Lee Jin Hee, Kim Young Min, Lee Sung Wook, Kwon Seung Woo, Heo Joon Seok, Choi Deok Moon, Kim Jung Young, Kim Young Ah and Choi Kwang Il.
The production team said the cast’s chemistry was already evident at the first reading and teased the arrival of “a new medical dark hero.”
Doctor X: The Age of the White Mafia premieres October 9th on SBS.
