Uhm Jung Hwa opened up about upcoming release of Ok! Madam: Bon Voyage and what the sequel means to her after 35 years in the entertainment industry.
My Daily sat down with Uhm Jung Hwa at a café in Seoul on August 4th where she discussed the film and her return as Mi Young.
Ok! Madam: Bon Voyage is a comedy-action film that follows former legendary agent Mi Young (played by Uhm Jung Hwa) and her family as their luxury cruise vacation turns into a dangerous situation when the ship is hijacked in the middle of the ocean.
The film is a sequel to Ok! Madam, which was released in 2020. The original cast, including Uhm Jung Hwa, Park Sung Woong, Lee Sang Yun and Bae Jung Nam, returns for the sequel, joined by new cast members Park Jin Joo, Ryeoun and Choi Sooyoung.
Uhm Jung Hwa shared how meaningful the sequel is to her, saying, “The first Ok! Madam, ended on a disappointing note because of COVID-19, but it received a lot of love through streaming platforms. Thanks to that support, we were able to make the second film.”
She continued, “A sequel isn’t something that happens just because I want it. This is actually the first time in my 35-year career that I’ve been part of a sequel. I feel incredibly proud as an actress. I’m happy that I have the opportunity to bring a character back to life, and it’s meaningful enough that I want to give myself credit for it.”
Uhm Jung Hwa also talked about reuniting with the cast, saying, “Everyone, including Park Sung Woong, became very close since we worked together from the planning stage. It didn’t feel like much time had passed.”
She added that seeing the younger cast members grow was especially memorable. “It was a little surprising to see Jeong Su Been (who played Oh Na Ri) all grown up, but what amazed me more was that her face still looked the same.”
The actress also addressed the film’s release timing, which comes alongside major Hollywood releases such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey.
“I’m excited for Spider-Man because it’s a movie series that our generation loved,” she said.
However, she expressed confidence in Ok! Madam: Bon Voyage, describing it as a movie that audiences of all ages can enjoy.
“Ok! Madam: Bon Voyage is a fun family entertainment film. It’s a Korean movie you can enjoy with popcorn while taking in the refreshing ocean setting,” she said with a laugh. “The fact that I’m in it is also one of its unique points. I hope audiences find a different kind of fun from it.”
Ok! Madam: Bon Voyage will hit theaters on August 12th.
