Jung Joon Won is already facing a casting debate ahead of A Bona Fide Killer.
On July 9th, MBC released the first teaser for its new Friday-Saturday drama, based on the hit webtoon of the same name. The action romance stars Gong Hyo Jin as Yoo Bo Na, a seemingly ordinary working mom who secretly lives as Kingfisher, a legendary sniper.
But once the teaser dropped, fans began debating Jung Joon Won’s casting as Yoo Bo Na’s husband, Kwon Tae Sung.
In the original webtoon, Kwon Tae Sung is a polished, strikingly handsome man. His looks are key to the story, since Yoo Bo Na falls for him at first sight.
Some viewers voiced concern, saying, “He doesn’t match the original character’s flashy heartthrob image,” and, “This has nothing to do with his acting, but the casting itself feels off.” Others came to his defense, arguing, “I think his gentle and warm vibe actually works” and “Acting matters more than visuals.”
Casting backlash is nothing new for webtoon adaptations.
Kim Go Eun faced similar criticism when she was cast as Hong Seol in tvN’s 2016 drama Cheese in the Trap. Fans questioned her visual match with the original character, but once the drama aired, she won viewers over with her lovable, relatable performance. The series opened at 3.6% and later climbed past 5.4%, while ranking high in TV buzz.
Choo Young Woo also faced doubts over his role in Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight. His character was originally a frail, terminally ill young man, while Choo’s build appeared much sturdier in early stills. But his emotional performance changed the conversation. The film drew 860,000 moviegoers and easily passed its break-even point.
As Kim and Choo proved, a perfect visual match is not always the winning formula. A strong performance can turn skepticism into a career-defining role.
Now, attention is on whether Jung Joon Won can do the same with A Bona Fide Killer.
