Eunseok, a member of the K-pop group RIIZE, has issued an apology following backlash over his use of a racially insensitive term.

On May 6th, the singer addressed the situation through a fan communication platform, stating, “Yesterday, I used an inappropriate expression while sharing a childhood photo. I apologize to those who may have felt uncomfortable due to my thoughtless and inappropriate word choice.”

The controversy began on May 5th when Eunseok posted a photo of himself as a child with the caption “kkamdungi.” While the term is sometimes used casually in Korea to describe someone with a dark complexion or a deep tan, it is widely recognized as a derogatory slur toward Black people.

Although Eunseok deleted the post shortly after it went up, the remark had already sparked significant criticism online, leading to his formal statement.

“Although I recognized my mistake yesterday and deleted it immediately, my heart grew heavy thinking of those who may have already been hurt, which led me to send this message again,” he explained.

Acknowledging the weight of his actions, he concluded, “I will be more careful in my thoughts and actions moving forward. I apologize once more.”
