Japanese model Shiho Yano shared a deeply personal story she had kept out of the spotlight for years in a recent appearance on the KBS2 variety show Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant.
While visiting the home of singer Ayumi to help cook dinner, the conversation turned to the topic of family planning.
Shiho Yano encouraged Ayumi, who has been considering a second child, to act sooner rather than later. “Don’t hesitate; if you’re ready, you should start trying now,” she advised, emphasizing the importance of timing when trying to conceive.
The conversation led Shiho Yano to share why she and her husband, MMA fighter and TV personality Choo Sung Hoon, never had a second child. She revealed she wanted a second child, but her husband Choo Sung Hoon was happy with just their daughter, Sarang.
“He kept saying he was okay with just one,” she confessed. “I think he felt that we had spent so much money on Sarang. I was the only one who really felt the need for a second child.”
The model then shared a painful experience from when Sarang was four years old. She sought medical help in hopes of having a second child and became pregnant through IVF, but sadly, the pregnancy ended in a miscarriage.
“Because it wasn’t a natural pregnancy, I couldn’t help feeling like it was my fault,” she said. “The shock was so great that I couldn’t try again. That was when I finally gave up on having a second child.”
Shiho Yano said her family’s quiet support and their move to Hawaii helped her heal. She shared that while she had focused only on work during her years in Japan and Korea, living in Hawaii taught her how to slow down and appreciate the meaning of life.
This was not the first time she spoke about these struggles. She previously revealed her IVF experience in her 2016 autobiography Self-Care. She explained that she had not planned to share such a personal experience at first, but the support she received encouraged her to open up.
Shiho Yano married Choo Sung Hoon in 2009. The couple later gained widespread popularity across Asia with their daughter, Sarang, through the hit reality show The Return of Superman.
