A civil complaint has been filed requesting a formal review of Cha Eun Woo‘s assignment to the Army military band, arguing that his current role is inappropriate given the massive tax evasion allegations he is facing.

A post surfaced on online communities on January 28th stating, “I submitted a civil complaint to the National e-People’s Portal asking for a review of Cha Eun Woo’s military band reassignment.” The petitioner has urged the Ministry of National Defense to re-examine whether it is suitable for the star to continue in a public-facing role and to consider transferring him to a different unit.

The poster argued that a military band position, which involves frequent external activities and performances, requires a higher standard of integrity. “Considering external trust, representation and troop morale, this role requires a stricter appropriateness review than general assignments,” the complaint read. “The scale and impact of the controversy are considerable, raising concerns about undermining public trust in the organization’s fairness.”

The civil complaint comes in the wake of explosive reports that the National Tax Service notified Cha of a back tax assessment exceeding 20 billion won ($13.6 million). Authorities allege that Cha used a “paper company” established by his mother to distribute income and evade higher income tax rates.

Cha’s agency, Fantagio, maintains that the issue is a legal dispute over whether the corporation is a taxable entity, stating, “It is currently not a matter that has been finally confirmed.”

Cha personally addressed the issue on social media, writing, “I am deeply reflecting on whether my attitude towards tax obligations was sufficiently strict,” and vowing to accept the final judgment of the authorities.

Signs of distancing are already visible. The Ministry of National Defense’s YouTube channel, “KFN Plus,” has reportedly set videos featuring Cha to private. He had previously participated as a storyteller in four episodes of the channel’s “That Day’s Military Story” series.

Cha enlisted as an active-duty soldier last July and is currently serving in the military band. While the civil complaint reflects growing public scrutiny, any decision to reassign him would be determined by internal military procedures. So far, military authorities have not announced any changes to his assignment.
