Shion Tsurubo is officially leaving JO1.
Lapone Entertainment confirmed on December 1st that Shion Tsurubo will conclude all activities with the group when his exclusive contract expires on December 31st.
The announcement comes roughly five months after Shion Tsurubo suspended his activities in June amid allegations of illegal online gambling. The situation escalated in August when he was formally indicted on gambling charges, shocking fans.
“We held multiple discussions with Shion Tsurubo and the other members during his suspension period,” the agency stated. “We offer our deepest apologies to the fans who have shown warm support, and we ask for your broad understanding of this sudden news.”
JO1 will now reorganize as a 10-member group.
Shion’s Personal Statement
Shion Tsurubo released a personal statement addressing his departure following the agency’s announcement. He shared that he spent his hiatus reflecting deeply.
“I am well aware that this decision will bring sadness to all JAM (JO1’s fandom) who have waited for my return for a long time,” he wrote. He emphasized that leaving was a choice made after deep thought and self-reflection.
He concluded with a message to his supporters: “I still deeply love my members and all of you, JAM. No amount of gratitude can fully express my heart.”
A Major Loss for JO1
Shion Tsurubo rose to fame in 2019 through Produce 101 Japan, securing the 11th and final spot to debut with JO1. He played a vital role in the group with his looks, vocals, and dance skills.
JO1 has been a dominant force in the Japanese music market, consistently topping the Oricon charts with hits like ‘PROTOSTAR,’ ‘STARGAZER,’ and ‘CHALLENGER.’
However, the group has faced a turbulent year. In addition to Shion’s gambling scandal, member Shosei Ohira also suspended activities in October amid allegations of a two-timing relationship with a girl group member.
