TVING’s upcoming original series Dear X is set to deliver a darker, more provocative twist on its original webtoon.

Helmed by Lee Eung Bok, the powerhouse director behind Sweet Home, Mr. Sunshine, Goblin, and Descendants of the Sun, alongside Park So Hyun, the series reunites some of the industry’s most trusted creatives. Writing duties are shared between Choi Ja Won, winner of KBS’s 2018 Drama Script Competition, and Vanziun, the original webtoon author.

Just days before the series premiere, both writers sat down to address the questions and expectations surrounding their project.

Vanziun explained the origins of the story: “I was obsessed with crime documentaries at the time and came up with the idea of a ‘sociopathic actress with two faces.’ From the beginning, I wanted the story to explore the question of conscience—how cruel a person can become once they abandon it, and how even a single person without conscience can poison everyone around them.”

She added, “The drama expands on the original webtoon with new twists, but I wanted to make sure the character of Baek Ah Jin remained true to her core. That’s why I joined the script team.”

Choi Ja Won also praised the cast that will bring those characters to life: “When I heard about the casting, I was thrilled. I knew Kim Yoo Jung would reveal a completely new side of herself—someone unlike any character she’s played before. I was excited to see how she would express such a complex emotional range.”

She continued, “Actors Kim Young Dae, Kim Do Hoon, and Lee Yul Eum all resembled their characters in uncanny ways—not just in looks but in their eyes, tone, and presence.”

Vanziun shared similar excitement: “When I first heard Kim Yoo Jung was cast, I was so happy I ended up smacking my pillow out of joy,” she joked. “Every casting announcement since then has made me think, ‘This project is truly blessed.’ The synchronization between the actors and their roles is 1000%. I can even see their faces as I write the dialogue—it’s surreal.”

TVING’s original series Dear X premieres on November 6th at 6 PM KST, releasing Episodes 1–4 simultaneously, followed by two new episodes every Thursday.
