At a press conference held September 29th at the Josun Palace Hotel in Seoul’s Gangnam district, Suzy and Kim Woo Bin shared what it was like to reunite after nine years for Netflix’s original fantasy romantic comedy Genie, Make a Wish.

The series follows Genie (Kim Woo Bin), a lamp genie who awakens after a thousand years, and Ga Young (Suzy), the lamp’s strange yet beautiful new master.

Describing her character, Suzy explained, “Ga Young was born a little different. She’s written as someone with antisocial personality disorder, so she’s basically emotionless. But thanks to the love of her grandmother and the villagers who raised her, she ends up living a life shaped by rules and routine. People usually think of psychopaths as terrifying, violent, or cruel, but Ga Young is the opposite—she actually lives more uprightly than others because she clings to order.”

Suzy admitted the role made her feel apologetic toward her co-star. “In romance, you’re supposed to give reactions back to your partner, but Ga Young doesn’t nod, smile, or even give cues. So a lot of scenes ended up looking like Woo Bin was doing a one-man show. But as the story goes on, her feelings deepen, and that starts to change.”

The drama marks the duo’s first project together since the 2016 KBS series Uncontrollably Fond. Suzy said, “Honestly, I didn’t realize it had been nine years. Meeting again in a completely different story and with new characters, I couldn’t even recall the bittersweet emotions from back then because I was having so much fun. This time, I felt like we clicked even better,” adding, “Since it’s a rom-com, that kind of back-and-forth rhythm is key, and it flowed much more easily. He’s still as considerate as ever, so I had so much fun filming.”

Kim Woo Bin returned the praise: “Like Suzy said, it only felt like maybe three years had passed. We didn’t need time to get close again, so talking about the project and our characters just came naturally. Working with her is always a joy, and thanks to her, I had such a great shoot. She acted so well I found myself in awe on set.”

Genie, Make a Wish premieres worldwide on Netflix October 3rd.
