The production of ALLY, director Bong Joon Ho‘s first feature-length animated film, has been officially confirmed. Bong is known for global hits like Parasite, Mother and Memories of Murder.
The film has been in development since 2019 and is co-written by director Yoo Jae Sun, whose film Sleep was showcased at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
ALLY is a large international project, involving top creative talent from 12 countries, including Korea. CJ ENM, Penture Invest and French studio Pathé Films are co-investing and distributing the film. BARUNSON C&C, led by producer Seo Woo Sik, will oversee production.
Inspired by real marine life, ALLY explores themes of friendship and courage, following a baby pig-squid named Ally, who dreams of seeing the sun. Ally’s peaceful underwater life is disrupted when a mysterious aircraft crashes into the sea, launching them on a thrilling adventure to the surface world.
The film promises stunning visuals, exciting action and a mix of humor and heartfelt moments, aimed at all ages.
Pathé Films, a well-established French studio, will handle distribution in France and several other regions. CJ ENM and Penture Invest will manage distribution in Korea, Vietnam, Turkey, and Indonesia, and will also handle sales in Japan, China, Hong Kong and Macau. The film is set for a worldwide release, with production expected to finish in mid-2027.
