Gong Myung recently looked back on his student days while discussing his latest role in Netflix’s new youth romance film, Love Untangled.

In an interview with Sports Chosun on September 3rd, Gong Myung admitted with a laugh, “Like Doyoung said, I was somewhat popular in school, but not to the level he makes it sound. Still, I guess I had a bit of modest attention.”

Love Untangled, set in 1998, follows 19-year-old Park Seri (Shin Eun Soo), who plans an elaborate mission to straighten her lifelong complex—her frizzy hair—before making a once-in-a-lifetime confession. However, things get complicated when she crosses paths with transfer student Han Yoon Seok (Gong Myung). The film is directed by Namkoong Sun, best known for Ten Months.

Gong Myung explained that playing Yoon Seok brought back memories of his own teen years. “I was originally introverted, but once I started working at 19, I became more extroverted. Filming this project really reminded me of that time—I kept thinking, ‘Oh, this is how I was back then.’”

His younger brother, NCT’s Doyoung, previously revealed on MBC’s I Live Alone, “My brother was quite well-known in Guri, so people knew me as his younger brother.” Gong Myung responded, “That’s not totally untrue, but he exaggerated a little. I was in the actor group Surprise with Kang Joon, and I heard Kang Joon was super popular in school, even nicknamed the ‘Sanbon Vitamin.’ But I had some popularity.”

Talking about the most memorable confessions he’d ever gotten, he laughed as he remembered, “There wasn’t really anything grand about it. Most of the time, people just confessed around White Day, or they’d play it off as an April Fool’s joke that turned into actually dating.”
