Korean feature film Handwritten (working title) has wrapped production, completing filming on August 26th and moving into post-production ahead of a planned 2026 release.

The film follows Justice Minister nominee Seok Gyu (Jung Sung Il), who prepares for a confirmation hearing while uncovering a long-buried case tied to the final death row inmate in Korea, Soon Hwa, and her handwritten letters. The story intertwines past and present, carrying a weighty social message along with an emotional punch.

Jung Sung Il, who made a lasting impression with Netflix’s The Glory and Trigger, stars as Seok Kyu. In addition to portraying the respected nominee—hailed as the new face of politics—Jung also plays the prosecutor handling Soon Hwa’s case back in 1997, exploring the dramatic shifts across more than 20 years.

Park Ji Hyun, seen in The Hidden Face and drama Flex X Cop, plays Soon Hwa, a woman sentenced to death for the infamous Migeum arson-murder case and branded one of the nation’s most notorious criminals. Bringing raw vulnerability and layered complexity to the role, Park is expected to raise the film’s intensity with her performance.

The project is backed by Bluefire Studio, also behind Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight, and co-produced by StoneV Studio, a label under Big Stone Pictures, the powerhouse behind The Admiral: Roaring Currents and Hansan: Rising Dragon.

The film marks the feature debut of director Hong Sung Min, whose screenplay Broken City won the 2023 Korean Film Council (KOFIC) scenario competition. Handwritten was also selected for KOFIC’s 2025 feature support program, underscoring industry expectations.

Bluefire Studio commented, “With its timely subject matter and the immersive performances of Jung Sung Il and Park Ji Hyun, ‘Handwritten’ will resonate deeply with audiences.”

Handwritten is now in post-production and is slated for release in 2026.
