South Korean national footballer Hwang Ui Jo, who was previously handed a suspended prison sentence for illegal filming, attended his final appeals hearing in person on Thursday, where he emotionally pleaded for leniency. Meanwhile, prosecutors are demanding a four-year prison sentence.

In his final statement to the Seoul Central District Court, Hwang choked up as he apologized for his actions. “I sincerely apologize for my thoughtless and wrongful behavior, which inflicted indelible harm on the victims and caused social controversy,” he stated. “I will never repeat my mistakes and will be reborn as someone who helps those in need and positively influences society.”

Hwang’s lawyer argued that the verdict could end the 33-year-old athlete’s career, stating that if the original suspended sentence is maintained, his eligibility to play for the national team could be revoked. The defense had previously argued that Hwang is crucial for the upcoming World Cup, where he must serve as the team’s core and pillar. The lawyer also asked the court to consider that Hwang is also a victim whose privacy was infringed upon, as the video in question was leaked by a third party.

However, prosecutors are requesting a four-year prison sentence. They argued that Hwang’s remorse was not genuine, as he only admitted to the crime after being formally indicted, having denied the crime when it was first brought up. The prosecution emphasized that the victim has not forgiven Hwang and has suffered considerable psychological damage.

The victim’s lawyer told the court that Hwang’s legal team had previously issued press releases revealing the victim’s identity and falsely claiming she had consented to being filmed.

The court is scheduled to announce its final verdict on September 4th.
