Famed comedian and host Shin Dong Yup is facing harsh criticism for his misconduct towards actor Lee Jun Young during the 4th Blue Dragon Series Awards ceremony.
On July 18th, the 4th Blue Dragon Series Award ceremony seemed to be going smoothly – performances performed, actors acting, etc. However, a slip of the tongue and an ill-timed joke towards Lee Jun Young made Shin Dong Yup the center of a broadcasting accident.
During the announcement of the Upbeat Popular Star Award, Lee Jun Young mistook a name pronounced as his own and, to his embarrassment, went up to claim the award until realizing the shocked expressions of the audience.
Lee Jun Hyuk, alongside IU, Park Bo Gum and Lee Hyeri were among the winners of this award but Lee Jun Hyuk’s name is similar to Lee Jun Young, so it was easy to understand the confusion. Presenter Jun Hyun Moo stated, “The pronunciation was inaccurate. I was also surprised,” and he couldn’t hide his flustered expression.
After realizing what went wrong, Lee Jun Young quickly descended from the stage, and Lee Jun Hyuk hugged him to lighten the atmosphere. However, Shin Dong Yup continued to comment on the situation, highlighting Lee Jun Young’s simple mistake even more, angering fans.
Shin Dong Yup said, “Having experienced numerous award ceremonies for over 30 years, today was the most fun. The fact that Lee Jun Young naturally moved up on stage was the charm of live broadcasting.”
Fans left angry comments saying, “If your first instinct is to mock someone clearly anxious and hurting, the problem isn’t Junyoung—it’s you. While some fans felt it was just a funny mistake that ended on a light note, others took it more seriously and recounted Shin Dong Yup’s previous controversies and troublesome antics. After When Life Gives You Tangerine won the Grand Prize, Lee Jun Young came on stage to say, “As life goes on, there are days when you receive a trophy twice,” and added, “I apologize once again to senior Lee Jun-hyuk… I love you,” making everyone laugh.
