Yoo Ah In, who was sentenced to prison for drug use, has been nominated for Best Actor.
The Directors Guild of Korea revealed the nominees for the 23rd Directors Cut Awards on April 22nd. The 23rd Directors Cut Awards will be held on May 20 at 7 PM and will recognize films and drama series released between January 1st, 2024, and March 31st, 2025, by full and associate DGK member directors.
Nominees for Best Actor include Robert Pattinson for Mickey 17, Yoon Joo Sang for The Land of Morning Calm, Choi Min Sik for Exhuma and Lee Byung Hun and Yoo Ah In for The Match.
Yoo Ah In was recently sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year suspension in his second trial for violating the Narcotics Control Act. Despite this, he has drawn attention for being nominated at an official awards ceremony.
Online users reacted with mixed responses, saying, “He can be nominated, but awards shouldn’t be given to criminals,” “Lee Byung Hun did all the promotion and yet Yoo Ah In is nominated,” “It’s strange to nominate a criminal when someone from the same film is already nominated,” and “Hate the crime, not the talent.”
The prosecution has appealed Yoo Ah In’s second trial ruling, and the case is currently awaiting a Supreme Court decision.
