IU has denied rumors that she received 500 million KRW (approximately 345,000 USD) per episode for her role in Netflix’s When Life Gives You Tangerines.
On Tuesday, a representative from Pan Entertainment, the production company behind the series, told multiple media outlets, “The claim that IU was paid 500 million KRW per episode is completely untrue.”
The rumors first surfaced in an online community post, which alleged that IU and her co-star Park Bo Gum were each receiving approximately 500 million KRW per episode for When Life Gives You Tangerines. The posts also alleged that Park Hyung Sik, a singer-turned-actor who is currently appearing in SBS’s Buried Hearts, received 500 million KRW per episode for the JTBC drama Doctor Slump. Additionally, it was claimed that actor Lee Jung Jae is receiving 1 billion KRW per episode for Netflix’s Squid Game 2.
When Life Gives You Tangerines unfolds the adventure-filled life of “feisty rebel” Ae Soon and “unyielding iron” Gwan Sik, born in 1950s Jeju Island. The series garnered attention for bringing together director Kim Won Seok, who helmed Misaeng and My Mister, with writer Lim Sang Chun, who enjoyed consecutive hits such as Fight for My Way and When the Camellia Blooms.
Since its release, When Life Gives You Tangerines has topped Netflix’s rankings in over 10 countries, according to FlixPatrol, and continues to dominate various buzzworthy drama charts. The 16-episode series drops four episodes every Friday on Netflix, with its finale set for March 28th.
