The hit Korean romance drama Nevertheless is getting a Japanese remake titled The Shapes of Love, set to premiere worldwide on Netflix and Japan’s streaming platform ABEMA on December 9th.
Originally aired in 2021, Nevertheless captivated audiences with its push-and-pull romance between Song Kang and Han So Hee, landing in Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English TV) for seven consecutive weeks. The series’ success continued in Japan, where it remained in the Top 10 for 13 weeks, further cementing its popularity.
The Japanese adaptation, titled The Shapes of Love, stars Ryusei Yokohama and is directed by Ryutaro Nakagawa, with Michihito Fujii serving as the series’ executive producer. Set in Kamakura, Japan, the eight-episode series delves into the impulsive yet fragile emotions of the characters, capturing the allure and heartbreak of love despite the risks.
SLL continues to deepen its collaboration with the Japanese entertainment market, following significant partnerships earlier this year. In May, Park Jun Seo, head of SLL’s production division, signed an MOU with leading broadcaster TV Asahi to co-develop content. Additionally, SLL’s All of Us Are Dead director Lee Jae Gyu joined forces with Mori Akira, producer at THE SEVEN, on new global drama projects through another MOU with TBS Group’s THE SEVEN production company.
“We’re thrilled that ‘Nevertheless,’ produced by SLL, is being remade with such talented Japanese actors and crew. I believe the remake has become an exceptional piece of work, balancing Japanese sensibility with stellar performances and thoughtful adaptation of local culture,” shared SLL’s Head of Global Distribution, Lee Min Jung. “Moving forward, SLL will continue to bring more quality projects to the Japanese market through remakes and other creative avenues.”
