Song Il Kook candidly revealed his career struggles after appearing on the popular show The Return of Superman.

In the July 3rd episode of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, Song Il Kook appeared with his triplets—Dae Han, Min Guk, and Man Se. Host Yoo Jae Seok noted, “Since the 2016 drama ‘Jang Yeong-sil,’ it’s been hard to see you in dramas.” Song Il Kook responded with a laugh, “I gained too much weight to do dramas.”

He elaborated, “It wasn’t just that I wasn’t prepared, but offers just stopped coming in. The strong image of being a ‘Superman’ dad was likely a factor. No projects came my way, not even events. I was so focused on parenting that I had little time to invest in myself. As my competitiveness as an actor declined, so did casting offers.”

Song Il Kook and his triplets, born in 2012, were beloved fixtures on KBS’s The Return of Superman from July 2014 to February 2016.

Facing a career hiatus, Song Il Kook signed up for around ten musical auditions. “Last year, I was in ‘Mamma Mia.’ It wasn’t offered to me; I had to audition. Some people were surprised I was auditioning,” he shared.

The triplets expressed their feelings about their father’s career pause, saying, “He practices musical songs so much that even we’ve memorized them. We feel he could have done more dramas if not for us.” However, Song Il Kook reassured them, “That’s not true. I prioritize family over work. My life goals are to be a good husband, a proud father, and dedicated to my work. Being present during your childhood is a gift. That alone is worth everything.”

Meanwhile, Song Il Kook will appear in the play Macbeth at the Haeoreum Grand Theater starting on the 13th. The cast includes Hwang Jung Min and Kim So Jin.
